The East Yorkshire Branch of the Flydressers’ Guild (EYFDG) came into existence in the early 1980’s. It adheres closely to the principles of the FDG, in promoting the art and craft of fly-tying, but now includes fly-fishing trips, and social events to which members can bring their families and friends. The Club is based in Beverley at the Conservative Club in Wylies Road. We have approximately forty incredibly nice members, covering the whole age range and, of course, both genders. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month with either fly-tying sessions or guest speakers.
These guest speakers are not only known nationally, but often internationally, for their expertise in fly-tying and fly-fishing and we have had such luminaries as Charles Jardine, Steve Thornton, Stuart Wardle, Phil White, Stuart Crofts and Nick Halstead, visit us.
The talks that they give are usually illustrated with a slide show for which we have a projector and large screen. Our fly-tying nights usually form part of our competition for the John Campbell and Charles Derrick Shield which is awarded to the best fly-tyer of that year. Use is made of a camcorder with the image being projected on to the screen, so that everyone can see the fly-tying in detail but without the need to huddle around the person tying the fly.
Although, fly-tying and listening to fly-fishing speakers is our principle interest we also organise fishing trips to both rivers and stillwaters. The social side of the Club includes a summer barbeque and at the end of the season an annual dinner. Two newsletters are sent out annually to members, with further bulletins being sent out as, and when, required.
The annual subscription is just £15 a year. There is a charge to members on "speaker" nights of £1 but no charge to members for "fly tying session" nights or "fly tying competition" nights. The charge to a non member attending any night is £5.
An absolute bargain!
